SSE wins marine licence for Berwick Bank C export cables
The Marine Management Organisation's approval for the Cambois Connection completes the consents for the grid link serving the third phase of SSE's 4.1GW Berwick Bank offshore wind project.
SSE has secured consent for the offshore export cable infrastructure serving Berwick Bank C in English waters. The company says this completes the approvals needed for the grid connection to the third phase of its 4.1GW Berwick Bank offshore wind project.
The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) granted the marine licence for the Cambois Connection, SSE said.
Connection details
The approved infrastructure will provide up to 1.8GW of transmission capacity, carrying offshore generation into the UK's national transmission network, according to the company.
It will comprise up to four high-voltage direct current (HVDC) offshore export cables, making landfall at Cambois near Blyth in Northumberland.
Northumberland County Council approved the onshore transmission infrastructure in November 2024. That covers export cables, a converter station and associated grid connections.
Scottish Government Ministers consented Berwick Bank's offshore array infrastructure in Scottish waters in July 2025. Consent for the Cambois Connection in English waters followed in August 2025.
Project status
Berwick Bank sits in the outer Firth of Forth, around 38km east of the Scottish Borders coastline. It is targeting 4.1GW across three phases of roughly equal size.
Berwick Bank C is the third phase. If built to full capacity, the project could become the world's largest offshore wind farm. SSE says that at full production it could generate enough renewable electricity to power more than six million UK homes a year.
The company is also advancing the second phase, Berwick Bank B, towards a final investment decision expected in 2027. That decision is subject to SSE's hurdle rates and investment criteria. Berwick Bank B secured a 20-year Contract for Difference for 1.4GW of capacity in January's Allocation Round 7.
Iain Jarvie, senior project manager for Berwick Bank C at SSE Renewables, described the licence as "another important milestone for the Berwick Bank project".
He said that, together with the onshore consent in Northumberland, the decision "provides further momentum" and reflects continued progress across the development.
